Information security in social media
When
employees are using social media they should understand that after something is
posted, it can be never taken back. So basic understanding and behavioral
skills that any person using social media are necessary. Employees should also
be made aware of their employers social media guides if there is one in place,
because some employers do not want to be presented in some way or with some
products for example. People should also be aware in general that many of
potential employers check their employee candidates social media and it could
affect their chances of being employed.
In discussion
boards where people need to discuss under their own names it seems that
discussions are generally more calm and decent. Regrettably, nowadays there are
trolls and normal people wanting to aggregate the discussions creating fake
profiles, and people should understand that some people only want to push your
buttons and not get into the arguments. As mentioned before, the way people act
in social media and media in general could affect the possibilities of getting
employed and that could affect the way people discuss. For example the
discussions in LinkedIn, a media that is used for professional networking, are
very professional and lack that kind of aggregation almost completely.
In my previous
post I brought up LinkedIn as the media that I like to use and
employee/employer branding. When employees use social media and even create a
brand for themselves, it affects the employer as well. Nowadays it is common
for sales professionals to attend courses to create a personal brand to increase
sales. On the other hand GDPR creates quite hard limitations to sharing personal
information about employees from employers side. But in my opinion it is nice
to see some kind of a story about the employees on the brands website, it give
a more approachable feeling about the company.
As I commented
on one of the discussions linked to this, if privacy is not taken care of it
could lead to getting a virus. And you getting a virus does not affect only
yourself but all the people you interact with the contaminated computer, email
list, Facebook friends, you name it.
My digital identity
I am quite “incognito”
in medias in Finland as my name is quite common. There are over 8500 women named
Koskinen and over 25000 with the name Sanna.
When
searching with my name, I found my LinkedIn profile picture and my LinkedIn
profile. The Facebook searches did not bring my profile up. There was no other
information related to me in the first 12 Google pages. I even tried to check
with adding my location “Länsi-Uusimaa” but did not find anything related to
myself.
GDPR Article 13
Before GDPR
came many people did not know all the places that stored some personal information
about them. Now GDPR allows more access and possibility for people to handle
their own data. In my opinion the main point of GDPR is to give identification of
who have access to what kind of personal information about the person in
question. And give information if some information is stored or given to some
other third party. Mainly the article gives people more access and ownership of
their own data that is stored somewhere else. And the possibility to decline to
give information and to get the information removed.
When
thinking about social media and GDPR the main item that comes to mind is targeted
marketing. If you are not allowed to store data to selling purposes it is difficult
to make targeted marketing that commonly is a very big part of companies
turnover.
Privacy in social media
I found a
blog: Data privacy in social media and why it matters
https://wearesocial.com/blog/2020/03/data-privacy-on-social-media-and-why-it-matters
https://wearesocial.com/blog/2020/03/data-privacy-on-social-media-and-why-it-matters
It was
really interesting to read hard data to how people have acted in social media
for example after Facebooks security breach and other revelations of lapsed
security in social medias. The blog shows that many people limit the topics
they share online and try to share the most personal data through closed social
media such as Whatsapp. The blog highlighted the need to personalize the
security settings at social media platforms to fit all the peoples needs.
